Mixed Media Wall Decor with Crowned Bird

This is a mixed media wall decor project I worked on last weekend. 

 

The little bird was born a red bird in the 60's. It was quite cheesy and in bad shape so I ripped all the feathers off and found red plastic underneath. I distressed some onion skin paper with Tim Holtz Vintage Photo Distress Ink and ripped it into small pieces which I glued to the plastic body with tacky glue. The crown is made of an old dictionary page rolled up then the end cut into points. The nest was some old school workbook pages run through a shredder and some grasses. I made the cage with rusted tie wire salvaged from the barn. The knob hook at the bottom is an antique brass drawer pull. The "B" was an old military brass stencil that was shiny and bright so I covered it with Ranger Vintage Photo Distress Embossing powder to get the rusty look. The floral fabric was a scrap piece that I coffee dyed. The background is a piece of 100 year old ledger paper and some antique sheet music with Vintage Photo Distress ink around the edges. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. This was a rare occassion when the idea in my head actually materialized instead of not working out and going in a different direction, which happens much more often than I like.

Does anyone else ever have that problem?
